1. Product Information

Kerastase Nutritive 8H Magic Night Serum is an overnight leave-in treatment positioned for dry hair. The formula is built around two headline actives the listing repeats throughout: plant-based proteins, described as nourishing the hair with essential nutrients while retaining moisture, and niacinamide, described as locking in hydration for long-lasting hair strength. It is the night-time step of the wider Nutritive routine, intended to sit alongside a conditioner or mask and a daytime heat protectant. Within the US catalogue it is filed under Hair Care > Styling Products > Serums, and at capture it ranked #2 in Hair Styling Serums and #1,027 in Beauty & Personal Care.

Use is deliberately low-effort and low-frequency: one to two pumps massaged into the lengths and ends of dry or damp hair before sleep, left in overnight, and not rinsed out in the morning, with the listing suggesting a three-nights-a-week cadence. The claimed mechanism is that the serum absorbs during the night rather than sitting on the surface, so it protects the hair from pillow friction, reduces frizz, detangles and adds shine by morning without transferring onto bedding.

2.1 Rating Distribution

Reading the distribution. The curve is strongly top-loaded and unusually polarised at the bottom. Five-star ratings account for 81% of 11,394 ratings and four-star for a further 8%, so 89% of raters sit at four stars or above, and the 4.6 mean is anchored by a very large satisfied majority. The middle is thin - three stars is 4% - while the negative tail re-weights upward: two stars is 3% and one star is 4%, meaning one-star ratings outnumber two- and three-star ratings combined. That inverted tail is the signature of a product most buyers rate highly but a minority reject outright, rather than one that delivers a mediocre average experience. Buckets are rounded integer percentages, so a stated 3% or 4% is not an exact count, and with a base of 11,394 a single point is roughly 114 ratings.

2.2 Aspect Sentiment

Eight aspects carry sentiment counts. Each bar shows the positive share of mentions; the count behind each aspect is printed at the right.

AspectMentionsPositiveNegativePositive shareReading

Shine109105496%Near-unanimous
Non-greasy9688892%Near-unanimous
Lightweight4845394%Near-unanimous
Value for money at 44% positive is close enough to the halfway line to read as a genuinely divided aspect rather than a negative one, while every other aspect sits at 77% or better. The complaint, where it exists, is about what the product costs, not about what it does.

2.3 What Buyers Say

"Customers find this hair serum effective, noting that a little goes a long way and it smells fabulous. The product receives positive feedback for its softness, making hair feel like silk, and its ability to reduce frizz and moisturise bleached ends. They appreciate its shine-enhancing properties, with hair looking fresh and styled, and its non-greasy formula that doesn't weigh it down. While many customers consider it worth the price, some find it overpriced."

Aggregate summary published on the listing. No individual reviewer is named, quoted by handle, or linked.

Recurring positives and complaints

Recurring positives

  • Effectiveness - 433 of 545 mentions positive. "A little goes a long way" is the recurring phrasing.
  • Softness - 232 of 244 positive (95%); the "hair feels like silk" theme.
  • Shine - 105 of 109 positive (96%), the highest-scoring aspect.
  • Non-greasy and lightweight - 92% and 94% positive; "doesn't weigh it down".
  • Frizz control - 181 of 227 positive (80%).
  • Fragrance - 200 of 261 positive (77%); "smells fabulous".

Recurring complaints

  • Price - the only complaint with real volume. Value for money is the sole aspect below 50% positive, at 44% (111 positive against 143 negative across 254 mentions).
  • No other aspect falls below 77% positive, so value is a single isolated objection rather than part of a broader quality problem.
Capture limitation. No individual US review text could be retrieved in this run - the desktop listing, the mobile listing and the review-endpoint fallbacks all returned zero inline reviews. The themes above come from the aggregate summary and the aspect-level sentiment counts, not from verbatim reviews. No buyer photo gallery was rendered on the listing either, so no user-submitted imagery is presented.

3. Ingredient Analysis

Two independent ingredient dossiers were captured and merged for this section: an ingredient database carrying 27 rated entries, and a claim-and-benefit database carrying 29 entries including the two colorants. Merging them yields a 29-ingredient list in INCI order, with function from the claim database and safety, comedogenic and irritancy ratings from the ingredient database. Twenty-seven of the 29 entries carry a safety rating; the two colorants do not.

3.2 Ingredients List - 29 Entries in INCI Order

Level is derived from the safety rating's upper bound: 1 is the safest figure and a higher value calls for more caution. Comedogenic and irritancy run the other way, where 0 is safest. A dash means not rated - which is missing data, not a clean bill of health.

The distribution is barbelled: 12 ingredients sit at Level 1-2 and 10 at Level 4-6, with only three in the Level 3 middle. That shape is not random - the low band is the solvent and humectant base plus the marketed actives, and the high band is almost entirely the fragrance system. Two ingredients carry a range (Dimethicone 2-5, Polyacrylamide 2-6), which means the underlying sources disagree; both are classified on the upper bound, so neither is understated.

3.4 Functional Composition

Functional groupIngredientsCountRole in the formula

Actives and colorantsNiacinamide, CI 19140, CI 147003The headline vitamin B3 derivative and the two dyes
Structural read. The fragrance system is the single largest functional group - 11 of 29 entries, or 38% of the list. That is consistent with the brand's positioning of the Nutritive scent as a signature element and with the floral scent claim on the listing. The formula is also silicone-led: Dimethicone sits at position 2, immediately after water, so the smoothing film is delivered at real concentration. The volatile isoparaffin pair (C13-16 and C13-14) is what lets a dimethicone film read as non-greasy - which is exactly the aspect buyers rate at 92% positive.

3.5 Flagged Ingredients

All ten flagged entries are fragrance materials. The single highest safety figure in the list is 4, and it is reached only inside the fragrance block.

Declared EU fragrance allergens

Nine of them: Linalool, Hydroxycitronellal, Benzyl Salicylate, Benzyl Alcohol, Hexyl Cinnamal, Citronellol, Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone, Coumarin and Limonene. Three - Linalool, Citronellol and Limonene - are also recognised essential-oil allergens. Their separate declaration means the listing is properly labelled, not that the fragrance load is low.

The fragrance verdict is not ambiguous here. Both the umbrella entry (Parfum / Fragrance at position 29) and eight individually named allergens are declared, so "contains fragrance" rests on named entries rather than on inference from function labels. Overnight contact with a pillow also extends exposure well beyond that of a rinse-off conditioner.

3.6 Benefit and Concern Signals

Benefits by supporting ingredient count

Community sentiment on the ingredient list

Benefit labels are generated by the claim database from ingredient-function matching and are skin-oriented vocabulary applied to a hair product - the database was built for facial skincare. Names such as "Scar Healing", "Dark Spots" or "Reduces Large Pores" are not claims the brand makes for this serum and should not be read as such. The ingredient counts behind each benefit are the useful part: benefits backed by four or five ingredients rest on real formulation depth, while those backed by one are weak evidence.

Class-level concerns flagged

ConcernDescription
May worsen irritationMay cause stinging, redness, or sensitivity.
May worsen eczemaMay worsen itching or irritation for eczema.
May worsen rosaceaCan trigger flare-ups in rosacea-prone skin.
May worsen oily skinMay increase shine or excess oil.

These are ingredient-class warnings - "this formula contains ingredients capable of ..." - not a verdict on the product or on any individual. Every one of them traces back to the fragrance system or to the silicone and humectant load.

Key ingredient groups recognised

GroupMechanismIngredients
Vitamin CBrightens, evens tone, supports collagen1
NiacinamideStrengthens, smooths, brightens1
AntioxidantsShields from free radical damage1

The Vitamin C and antioxidant groups both resolve to the same single entry, Ascorbyl Glucoside at position 11. The database does not separately recognise the hydrolysed wheat, corn and soy protein trio that the brand markets as its plant-based protein complex, because protein conditioning is not a category this skin-oriented database scores.

The official brand ingredient list publishes the same 29 entries in the same order as the merged list above, so there is no formula-version gap: this is a single, current formulation. Extract content is minimal - Iris Florentina Root Extract at position 25 is the only botanical extract in the formula.

A 29% spread over roughly three years is moderate for a prestige hair-care item, but the shape matters more than the width: only two dated extremes exist, and the ceiling is the current value. There is no recorded excursion above $64.00 and no return to the floor once the ceiling was set.

Timeline of dated extremes

1 Sep 2026Highest ever observed - and the current value$64.00
1 Nov 2026This capture$64.00 (last observation, 61 days old)

The low and the high are about 70 days apart and both fall in 2026; nothing in the earlier two-plus years produced a dated extreme. The price movement on this item is concentrated in the recent window rather than spread across its history - though the record does not expose enough observations to say more than that.

Buy-timing read. The product is sitting at the highest price ever recorded. The tracked average of $58.52 is a credible reference level here - unusually, the extreme high is not a launch-date artefact, because it is dated nearly three years after monitoring began - so the current $64.00 is a genuine premium of about 9% to the long-run mean and about 29% to the observed floor. The single $49.60 observation in June 2026, never repeated, reads more like a short promotional event than a structural price level. Both statements are inferential. Note also that the tracked "current" value is 61 days old at capture; the live listing confirms $64.00, but the price should be re-verified before any transaction.

5. Positioning and Who It Suits

The case for it

  • Category standing. #2 in Hair Styling Serums and #1,027 in Beauty & Personal Care at capture - a genuine top-of-category position, not a niche listing.
  • Sentiment depth. 11,394 ratings at 4.6, with 89% at four stars or better and near-unanimous scores on softness (95%), shine (96%), non-greasy feel (92%) and lightweight feel (94%).
  • Coherent formula. The three marketed actives - niacinamide, the hydrolysed wheat/corn/soy protein trio, and glycerin - are all present, and the silicone-plus-volatile-solvent system explains the "doesn't weigh it down" feedback mechanically.
  • Claim compliance. Six of twelve tested claims pass, including paraben-free, sulfate-free, fungal-acne-safe and pore-clogger-free.
  • Brand-operated offer. Sold by Kerastase itself.

The case against it

  • Fragrance load. 11 of 29 entries are perfume or masking materials, including nine declarable EU allergens. All ten flagged ingredients are fragrance-related.
  • Price objection. Value for money is the only aspect below 50% positive (44%), and the item is currently at its all-time high - 9.4% above the tracked average and 29.0% above the observed floor.
  • Not a clean-label product. Not fragrance-free, not silicone-free, not alcohol-free, not vegan, not cruelty-free.
  • Synthetic colorants. CI 19140 and CI 14700 are present and unrated in the ingredient database.
  • Class-level warnings. Four concern flags, all traceable to the fragrance system or the silicone and humectant load.

6.2 Limitations

  1. Snapshot, not a series. Every figure is a capture taken on 1 November 2026. Rank, price and rating counts move between captures.
  2. No individual review text. The desktop listing, the mobile listing and the review-endpoint fallbacks all returned zero inline reviews, so Section 2 rests on published aggregates and aspect counts rather than on verbatim buyer quotes. No reviewer is named, handled or linked anywhere in this report.
  3. No buyer photography. The listing exposed no customer image tiles. All imagery shown is listing-supplied and labelled as such.
  4. All-time price only. The tracking record's summary block is identical at every chart window, so no 1-month, 3-month, 6-month or 1-year low, high or average can be produced. Nothing in Section 4 is a period statistic.
  5. No observation-level price history. The record holds five values per price type, not a row-per-change table, so nothing can be said about how many times the price moved or how long it spent at any level.
  6. Single tracked channel. Only third-party new carries data, so no first-party versus marketplace comparison, no marketplace premium and no parity assessment is possible.
  7. Reference data, not regulation. Ingredient ratings come from community databases. They are reference material, not a compliance determination and not a substitute for a patch test.
  8. Unrated is not safe. A dash in any ingredient column means no data. Twenty-five of 29 entries carry no comedogenic value and 25 carry no irritancy value.
  9. Skin vocabulary on a hair product. Benefit and concern labels are generated by a skincare database. They describe ingredient classes, not product performance on hair.
  10. Regional formula caveat. The official ingredient list used for cross-checking is the brand's regional site listing; the US listing does not publish a full INCI. Regional formulas can differ.

Analysis compiled 1 November 2026. Pricing is native USD captured against a New York (10001) delivery reference. Rank and price are live values and will move. Ingredient ratings are aggregated reference data and are not a regulatory or clinical determination.
